May the Fourth be with You!

Updated: May 4, 2020

May the Fourth be with You! Today is a very special day to all Star Wars fans! Why you asked? Today is the unofficial (holi)day celebrating Star Wars.

What is May the Fourth be with You?

Also known as Star Wars Day and sometimes Jedi Day on May 4, celebrates George Lucas' Star Wars. It is observed by fans of the media franchise. Observance of the commemorative day spread quickly through media and grassroots celebrations.

The date was chosen for the pun on the catchphrase "May the Force be with you" as "May the Fourth be with you". Even though the holiday was not created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans across the world have chosen to celebrate the holiday. It has since been embraced by Lucasfilm and parent company Disney as an annual celebration of Star Wars.

My bf and I are a big fan of Star Wars (and also Star Trek and Battlestar Galatica), so I decided to draw us cosplaying my two favourite characters, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Rey~ I currently like Cal Kestis, but Master Kenobi is still the best Jedi to me haha. Several days later my bf commissioned me to draw several Croatian Mensa members (him included) as Star Wars ensemble to post on Croatia Mensa official social media.

Back to the origins, where does "May the Force be with You" phrase come from?

Many would attribute the phrase "May the Force be with you" with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Some also attribute the phrase to Han Solo when he wryly bid farewell to Luke Skywalker just before the latter embarked to Battle of Yavin (also known as Attack on the Death Star) Both scenes are from the original 1977 Star Wars film).

But true fans will tell you it is actually said by a minor character, General Dodonna, as he dismisses Rebel troops before their attack on the Death Star.

So are we only celebrating "May the Fourth"?

Actually no. There are two more. Depends how hardcore the fans are, or their side choice of the Force, right after May the 4th some would celebrate Revenge of the Fifth of Sixth. This is another date-based pun of the 2005 Star Wars film Revenge of the Sith. On this day, rather than celebrating the heroes, fans celebrate villains from the franchise instead.

Finished this art within 24 hours! I must say I'm quite proud of this~ Have a look here!
