Bon Odori 2018 (13 August 2018)

Updated: Feb 28, 2020

Every year this Japanese-Malaysian Cultural Exchange event is held at the National Sports Complex in Shah Alam, with an expected attendance of over 30,000 participants.

Obon (お盆) or just Bon (盆) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist-Confucian custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars. It has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon Odori.

After missing last year Bon Odori, I decided to join this year.

Originally my housemate supposed to join me and we both agree to wear pink wig. However she fell ill at the last minute and bailed out. Despite she's not joining I decided to proceed with the wig, and surprisingly the wig is very airy and comfortable.

As usual we they have 3 type of dances. I didn't have any videos of the dance as I was busy dancing, but I took videos of the Taiko (Japanese percussion instruments)performances.

All Bon Odori ended with Hanabi (fireworks), but unfortunately in the past 2 years Malaysian had banned fireworks. This the videos of hanabi taken 3 years ago.

[Extra] Whoever you're I'm doing this for ya!
